How Does Solar Work?

Solar power uses Photovoltaic Cells to capture the energy of the sun in the form of DC energy.
DC energy is converted via a solar inverter to AC energy, this AC energy is what is used in your home.
Your inverter is wired into your main switch board where the AC energy is utilised in your home first and if any excess energy is available, it will be sent to the grid if possible.
If a battery is utilised on the home the excess energy will be stored for night time use opposed to being sold to the grid.

A Solar PV system is made up out of three major components, the Inverter, the battery storage and the PV panels that generate the dc power when exposed to light.
In most cases the PV panels can support all your power needs during the day while the sun is shining on the panels. Batteries can be added to cover your electricity needs during the no-sunlight periods for example during the night hours. The size of your battery bank determines the duration that you can carry your household loads. If we calculate the total electricity that you consume per hour, we can design the battery bank capacity to cover all your power consumption. This way you do not have to use power from the public power grid. If you decide to only cover the hours that you have loadshedding a smaller battery bank is used. Very Occasionally an off-grid system can be unsuccessful and not fully re charge the battery bank, for example if we experience very long periods of rainfall that prevents the PV panels from charging the batteries to their maximum capacity. In this type of situation, we can add a second fuel backup generator to simply top up the system or also connect the system to the public grid to top-up and recharge.

There are a few ways to determine how much electricity you consume on average. Normally we examine your past electricity accounts to work out an average and design the Solar system to cover your consumption. We can also monitor your power usage over a set time period by fitting a tracking device, the device allows us to record your usage and analyse when you are using the most power and how much electricity you consume every day.

The size of your Solar PV system plays a big part in the time it takes to complete an installation. Small to medium systems can take 2 to 5 working days to complete on average.

In general, the Inverter is very quiet and does not disturb customers in terms of operating noise. Best practice is to mount the Inverter in a secure dry environment, heat also plays a role in the effectiveness of the Inverter and battery banks and good insulated areas are preferred mounting positions. Like any other battery system the solar batteries must remain dry and protected from the elements. We recommend to place batteries in the motor garage or in a room where they are out of harms way.
